Résumé | In November 2021, the southwest of British Columbia (BC) suffered from back-to-back rainfall events, which caused strong floods in the area. One of the regions that experienced this event was Coquihalla River. Due to these floods, the river overflowed in the area 5 km east of Hope. In this region, the river is located between the westbound lane of Highway 5 and Othello Road. The river is very close to the driving lanes in this area. Because of this short distance, the flood impacted the road bank and caused slope erosion, which resulted in a failure of the road, specifically in the westbound lane of Highway 5. The flood caused extensive damages to the infrastructure in the area. In order to investigate the road failure, the University of Ottawa was asked to numerically simulate the flood and the erosion process to better understand the mechanics of a road failure event. This project is defined in two parts: (i) the numerical simulation of the flood hydrodynamics and the sediment transport procedure around the road and (ii) the slope stability analysis to understand the road slope failure due to the flooding event. For the first part, among various software packages that are capable of simulating these phenomena, Flow3D was chosen based on the past successful experiences and its robustness in numerical simulation of such large-scale problems. In the second part of the project, different types of ripraps were investigated in order to find the rock particle size that can prevent the road failure. For this section, the well-known SLOPE\W software from GeoStudio was used because of its strong capabilities of slope stability analysis. This software uses a finite element approach for slope stability analysis. In order to simulate the hydrodynamics of the event, a 3D drawing of the domain was prepared and imported into Flow3D. The required modules of the software including the sediment transport and free surface modules were employed and set up. All of the necessary properties were implemented in the model in order to have accurate results. After simulating the hydrodynamic results for the actual flood and the erosion process caused by observed flood event, a sensitivity analysis was conducted for the flood discharge and the sediment size. Based on the findings of the sensitivity analysis, we concluded that the road is at the risk of failure even for smaller flood events. One of the possible solutions for this problem is to use a riprap cover on the road embankment slope. The results of the slope stability analysis for different ripraps are mentioned in this report. |
