Résumé | A series of flight campaigns in high total water content regions of deep convective clouds has provided a unique in-situ dataset for characterization of the ice crystal icing environment. The dataset has previously been analyzed for total water content and particle size, with results provided to the Federal Aviation Administration to support the assessment of the Appendix D/P envelope by an Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee. This article provides a supplementary analysis of the total water content dataset, using a data point definition more likely to capture the cloud-traverse maximum, and a parametric approach for calculating percentiles. With this new analysis, composite estimates of 99th percentile TWC at the 17.4 Nm reference distance from the three project locations increased 10-23% relative to the earlier analysis, depending on the temperature interval. At 0.5 Nm, they increased from 25-45%. Differences were largely attributed to the changed data point definition. The new results provide supplementary and complementary information that may be more useful for some applications. |
