Abstract | The properties of repointing mortars for older masonry assemblies as well as their on-site installation practices are somewhat different than those typically used in modern masonry construction. Inappropriate repointing materials and execution practices can result in permanent damage to older masonry assemblies, affecting their aesthetics qualities, heritage value, performance and service life. This paper provides architects, engineers, masons, contractors, property owners and managers with a better appreciation of key considerations for durable repointing mortars that contribute to the preservation of Canada's older masonry buildings. |
