Abstract | The author describes a large number of tests carried out with various types of wall (dense walls and lightweight panels) in order to assess the importance of thermal bridges and to determine the effectiveness of possible remedies. He shows that the accepted theory used in the calculation of U values is unsatisfactory when estimating surface temperatures. The results obtained can be explained, however, by two simple hypotheses. From these, practical rules are derived by which the effect of a thermal bridge can be estimated, and recommendations are made for reducing this effect. |
