Abstract	The characteristics behaviour and properties of frozen soils arise because ice and water coexist under the condtiions imposed by the porous structure of the soil. The results of an investigation into the relative amounts of ice and water in frozen soils led to a series of related studies, described in the present volume, each of which was suggested by the conclusions arising from the preceding one.
